Lying cop owned by lawyer who knows his rights

Watch this video an Uber driver recorded of a cop telling him that he was not allowed to film the encounter, which is completely false. The officer, like many of his contemporaries, incorrectly assume that people are unaware of their rights as citizens and that they are welcome to lie to them;

One of the first things Jesse Bright did after being pulled over by police on a recent Sunday afternoon was turn on his phone and begin filming.

Bright was driving for Uber to make some extra cash, but he works full-time as criminal defense attorney in North Carolina. As a lawyer, he said, he believes strongly that when people record their interactions with police, it helps reduce confusion if their cases end up in court.

As he aimed his phone in the direction of officers and recorded, Bright was surprised to hear Wilmington police Sgt. Kenneth Becker tell him that there was a new state law that prohibited him from recording police.

Bright told The Washington Post that he knew better — no such law exists in North Carolina.

“Hey, bud, turn that off, okay?” Becker said.

“No, I’ll keep recording, thank you,” Bright responded. “It’s my right.”

  1. at least they are being exposed now…

  2. Why do cops always throw the “are you a lawyer” line when you exercise your rights? Do they think laws are only for cops and lawyers to see?

    • Cops cannot be honest, it’s not an honest job, it’s not the fault of individual cops, but they perceive that they are blamed for failures of the institution, and their ego strikes back with the cheap blows and questions that they typically throw when they feel threatened. Their job, is to bully you into submission, to maintain order. That’s how the law, in the United-States, works.

    • Omg I’m so glad you said tht

    • Learned it from KRS-One.

  5. i love the hell out of this, if they jailed him they would probably have to hire an entire new police force andand pay a huge fine. dude is a lawyer, and police have to uphold the law, its brilliant. 😀 # when it pays to have a degree

  6. Earning the hate…

  7. Cops keep making up laws. But they wonder why people don’t like them.

    • Yea, I had someone bash their vehicle into my garage door but the local police refused to investigate. But I was in the middle of cutting my grass and had some clippings blown into the street and the police showed up and made me blow the street.

One of several reasons I DON’T support the police. I understand the difficulty of their jobs at times but $$$$ always rule.

American cops should come to norway to learn how to be a better cop. Dont get me wrong i know cops does wonderful work in us. In norway you get police training for at least 3 years and not just some months. Police in norway dont even use guns they have the guns locked up in car or at the police station. Police around the world should get together and train and learn from each other.

  11. Lawyer driving Uber for extra money? WTF

    • (I’m going to law school in a few years to be a lawyer) Lawyers at first don’t actually get paid that well, he said he was there for 3 years he wouldn’t be making a TON of money but a nice chunk but still needs more so he drives an Uber. There’s nothing wrong with that.

cops really are the enemy but people insist they are good people

  13. If the cop is doing nothing wrong he shouldn’t have any problems being filmed.
