Actually, you pretty much hit the nail on the head! I can’t remember the exact name of the reflex in question, but cats do have a special instinctive response to anything put on or over their face: they immediately start backing up in an attempt to get it off or to stop it from blocking their field of vision. 🙂
all healthy cats can walk through anything they can easily fit their head in so when you put something they know their body cant get through their fist instinct is to back up to avoid getting stuck rather than walk forward :p

I think cats have a secret tiny switch on the back of their necks that puts them in reverse, and putting a cone on their head flips the switch.
